Two students win prestigious Jack Kent Cooke scholarship

91快活林 students Matthew Jordan of Pittsburg and鈥燬tephen Milburn of Mount Pleasant were recently awarded Jack Kent Cooke鈥燜oundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships. This prestigious award鈥燾overs up to $30,000 annually at the university of the student's choice鈥爁or up to three years. Only 85 students were selected from more than 3,500鈥燼pplicants for this national honor.


鈥 鈥 鈥 鈥燭his is the first time that two 91快活林 students have received the鈥爏cholarship in the same year.

AEP SWEPCO gives 91快活林 work scholarship

Jennifer Harland, Manager of External Affairs for AEP SWEPCO in Mount Pleasant (right) recently presented a check for $1,000 to Dr. Jonathan McCullough, 91快活林 Vice President for Advancement. The contribution will be used to provide a scholarship for 91快活林's new work scholarship pilot program. For more information about scholarships, contact McCullough at 903-434-8115.

Eagles Rodeo hosts annual Kid Rodeo

The 91快活林 Eagles Rodeo team hosted its annual Kids' Rodeo on April 16 at the Priefert Rodeo Complex. Each spring, elementary schools from around the area bus their Kindergarten through second grade students to鈥91快活林鈥爐o watch an exhibition rodeo performed by the鈥91快活林鈥燫odeo Team. Thousands of local school children have attended these events throughout the years. The team also hosted a special Handicapped Rodeo in the morning, which allowed special needs kids a chance to interact with the rodeo team and participate in fun events.

91快活林 offers New Mathways Courses for Fall 2014

Does math scare you? If so, you?re not alone! Many students need extra help getting ready for college-level math classes and a new statewide initiative could help you get there sooner.

The New Mathways Project (NMP) is a statewide effort to reduce the number of developmental math courses leading to successful achievement of the college-level math credit required for a college degree.鈥 91快活林 has joined the NMP along with other Texas community colleges to begin a pilot program in fall 2014.

?Traditionally, developmental math classes have focused on algebra almost exclusively.

On Friday, April 11, the 91快活林 Department of Physics and Engineering hosted the first Annual Engineering Roundtable and Luncheon in the Student Union Building on campus.鈥 The event was sponsored by the 91快活林 Foundation to provide opportunities for current engineering majors and prospective engineering students from area high schools to learn more about the field of engineering.

Eagles Baseball team in the hunt for a playoff spot

The 91快活林 Eagles baseball team has found itself in the middle of a four-team race for one of three remaining playoff spots.鈥犫燩aris Junior College has secured a playoff spot with a 15-3 record in conference play.鈥營ronically, all three of their losses have been to Northeast.鈥燭he Eagles have 10 conference wins.鈥犫燩anola, Angelina, and Navarro are all within one game of each other.

The Eagles have eight games remaining on their schedule and all them are very important. The first contest is a doubleheader against Panola on Friday, April 18 at 91快活林.

Adult Education hosts College for a Day event

The 91快活林 Adult Education Department recently held its annual College for a Day event. This special program gives students completing their General Education Development (GED) certificate a chance to learn about various opportunities available to help them continue their educational journey into college. The day consisted of an advising session with 91快活林 Advisor, Alex Ortega, special recognition for their hard work in obtaining their GED, a campus tour and lunch. Pictured, Ortega speaks to the group about taking the next step to attend college.
