Dr. Andrew Yox, 91¿ì»îÁÖ's Honors Director, recently reached a climactic moment of his †twenty-year career in Northeast Texas.

On March 4 in Irving, The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) awarded Yox the Mary Jon and J.P. Bryan Leadership in Education Award, a citation that came with a $5,000 prize.† It is the top financial award granted each year by the TSHA, open to university and college educators in history throughout the state.

Two 91¿ì»îÁÖ students were recently named to the 2016 Coca-Cola College Academic Team. Isaac Burris was named a Coca-Cola Gold Scholar and Morgan Capps was named a Coca-Cola Gold Silver Scholar.†The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually.

Beginning this spring, history students at 91¿ì»îÁÖ will have the opportunity to compete for the first annual Bonnie Spencer Prize. In addition to a grade, students will be able to enter their U.S.

The Honors Program of 91¿ì»îÁÖ is accepting applications for the 2016-2017 school year. The deadline to apply is March 1. High School seniors in the top tenth of their class are welcome to apply, as well as 91¿ì»îÁÖ students with a 3.5 GPA or higher. Honors Northeast combines challenging seminars of key core curricular classes, with opportunities for advanced mentoring, student travel, interscholastic competition, publications and community service.

The 91¿ì»îÁÖ Honors Committee recently promoted Hector Zuniga, an 91¿ì»îÁÖ sophomore from Mount Pleasant, from the title of Honors Scholar to Presidential Scholar. Zuniga won the citation for Academic Excellence in last fall?s Biotex Honors Seminar and has maintained a 4.0 GPA at 91¿ì»îÁÖ.† The Biotex seminar is composed each fall of entering honors students, and Zuniga won the top rank.†Honors Northeast also admitted two additional Honors Scholars - Kassandra† Martinez and Ryan-Rose Mendoza.

Jim and Paula Archer recently contributed $1,000 to the Honors Northeast program at 91¿ì»îÁÖ. A matching gift from IBM brought the total gift to $2,000. †The gift will be used to fund cultural trips for scholars in Honors Northeast.

Since its inception at 91¿ì»îÁÖ in 2007, the Honors Program has begun each school year with a ?roundup?

Five sophomore 91¿ì»îÁÖ Honors students, in addition to Honors professors Dr. Mary Hearron and Dr. Andrew Yox,†recently†represented 91¿ì»îÁÖ at the 50th Anniversary meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) in Chicago. The NCHC is the premier association of honors programs and honors colleges in the nation. 91¿ì»îÁÖ is the only community college to have featured scholarly student presenters at the yearly NCHC continuously since 2008.

NCHC committees select proposals to present on the basis of appeal, previous awards, and scholarly promise.
